The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland (NYOI) make a special visit to Galway on January 4th with Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra. This winter concert will be a unique orchestral event featuring 160 advanced young musicians from all over Ireland.
This concert will mark the culmination of the annual NYOI winter residential course which this year includes a first-time joint collaboration with Symphonic Waves. NYOI will be joined by Symphonic Waves and conducted by Gearóid Grant and Professor James Cavanagh, with a full symphonic programme including works by Schubert, Beethoven, Berlioz and Elgar.
NYOI works with the next generation of musicians (aged 12-18) and are delighted to begin their 50th anniversary year with a return to Galway, and to be playing alongside Symphonic Waves as part of Galway 2020, European Capital of Culture.
Symphonic Waves is an exciting emerging West of Ireland youth orchestra, formed as part of the cultural programme for Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and managed by Music Generation Galway County. The orchestra was formed in 2017 as a string orchestra and developed into a full Symphony Orchestra during 2019. With conductor Professor James Cavanagh at the helm, they have been exploring some of the great composers of classical music as well as some lighter repertoire with recently commissioned U2 song arrangements.
