Dine at a medieval banquet in the Great Hall – an evening of music, mead and roast meats that recreates the world of Bunratty’s nobility.

Bunratty Castle’s massive grey stone walls rise over the green County Clare landscape like a monolith – a bold proclamation of power and strength. One of the most complete and intact castles on the island of Ireland, Bunratty started life in the 10th century as a Viking trading camp. The current castle – the fourth to have been built here – was constructed in 1425 and has seen warrior chiefs, Cromwellian forces, and centuries of Irish drama unfold within its walls.

    Going back in time

In its heyday, Bunratty was all about splendour, with stunning landscapes, gardens and a herd of around 3,000 deer. Today, the castle sits on 26 acres of rolling countryside and features guided tours as well as a folk park, a “living” village, and a Regency Walled Garden.

A great way to experience Bunratty’s atmosphere is to join a medieval banquet. This long-standing tradition takes place in the Great Hall, where costumed performers, traditional harp and fiddle music, and a feast of mead and roast meats create a captivating spectacle.

    Beyond Bunratty

The castle is located close to Limerick city (a 20-minute drive), which boasts a famous castle of its own. Step into King John’s Castle and you’ll be immersed in a world of 13th-century intrigue and compelling tales.

Also in Limerick city, you can enjoy a world of art and antiquities at the Hunt Museum, great food at the weekend Milk Market, and the gorgeous 12th-century St Mary’s Cathedral, with exquisite stained glass windows.
