See what Ireland has in store for you
Explore the loughs and islands of Connemara’s coastline, discovering secluded bays and pirate castles. Experience the challenge of rowing these unique and iconic boats of Ireland’s Atlantic shores. Each currach needs one or two rowers, and each boat can decide how to share the workload. The currach’s legendary load carrying abilities mean each boat can carry a family of five just as easily as being rowed alone. The trips are suitable for all ages from five years upwards, although under 18’s need an accompanying adult. Currachs are one of the original boats of Ireland; rowing currachs are still made with a strip-wood frame and a waterproof cover. These days it is often tarred canvas or fibreglass instead of a cow hide. They differ from the average rowing boat by having a smooth, round hull and no keel, they are long and narrow and they were made to travel under oar and not motor. Your guide, Wol, is highly experienced with over 25 years’ experience including taking white water rafts through the rivers and deserts of Southwestern USA. He is a qualified sea kayak guide (BCU Level 4), REC 3 first aid, white water raft guide and canoe slalom coach for the Canoe Association for Northern Ireland. His love for rowing traditional boats began when his own children grew too big to share his own kayak. The currach’s character and versatility won him over, and in 2017 he began offering tours to others for the chance to experience rowing these unique boats in their home seas. Personalised trips are possible with prior arrangement. These can include 1 hour tasters, full day tours, kids' fishing or alternate locations. All essential kit is provided. Guests will need to bring suitable clothing for a day on the water and a spare change of clothes. Feet will get wet launching so old soft shoes or sandals are ideal but a small selection is available to borrow.
