See what Ireland has in store for you
Navan Centre & Fort, located just two miles from Armagh City, is a place where myth and reality meet. As the ancient seat of Kings and the earliest capital of Ulster, there is plenty to explore. Step back in time by 2000 years with a visit to our Iron Age area (open April-September), where you will meet the Celts going about their daily routines and bringing our historic past to life. Discover how the clan survived and thrived as they engage you in this highly interactive & unique experience. After meeting real life warriors, learn more about the stories of the bravest of them all – Cú Chulainn and the Red Branch Knights. Our multilingual AV show incorporates many of the tales of the Ulster Cycle associated with the local area. Explore the archaeology & history associated with the great temple at Emain Macha (Navan Fort), dating back to 95BC, as well as learning of some of the significant discoveries at the nearby sites of Loughnashade and the King’s Stables. Our newly updated exhibition space uncovers the story of one of Ireland’s most important archaeological sites & centuries of legendary tales and ancient traditions, animated through refreshed displays and incredible artefacts such as an original piece of 2000 year old timber from the great temple! Our timeline helps situate the impact Navan Fort continues to have on surrounding areas, not least being regarded as the very reason St. Patrick chose Armagh as the place to build his first stone church and establish the city as the Ecclesiastical Capital of Ireland. This is a real gem of the Orchard County of Armagh and offers a unique experience and insight into life long ago. Ancient Grounds Coffee Shop is located in the historical setting of the Navan Centre, with free onsite parking. Start your day with one of our legendary homemade scones, the ideal accompaniment to a warming tea or coffee. We also offer a wide array of breakfast & hot lunch options, made from locally sourced ingredients, so you are sure to find something to tempt your taste buds. The comfortable and relaxing surroundings mean this is the perfect meeting place to enjoy delicious food, followed by a walk to nearby Navan Fort.
