Situated in Gurteen village at the crossroads of the R293 and R294, the visitor centre comprises of a 150 seat theatre with regular music shows, music shop which stocks a large selection of CDs, music books, instruments and local crafts. The visitor can enjoy a 15 minute audio visual presentation on the history of Irish music and an exhibition area with interactive screens featuring musicians of the surrounding counties. The centre is dedicated to the memory of the late Michael Coleman (1891-1945) who was certainly the most influential traditional musician of the twentieth century. His legacy as a master fiddle player extended far beyond his native south Sligo where his youth was spent listening to and absorbing traditional music. Following his move to America in 1914, Michael settled in New York where he made close to 80 recordings with major record companies.

Today, Ceoláras Coleman is the regional resource centre for Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and services the Comhaltas network in Counties Sligo, Mayo and Roscommon, Leitrim and Fermanagh. The Comhaltas office contains a constantly growing archive, containing in excess of 16,000 original recordings and films which can be viewed by appointment. A visit to the Coleman Heritage Centre at Mountirwin is a must, it consists of a replica of the 1900s thatched cottage, the ancestral home of Michael Coleman.
