Walk Dun Laoghaire/Joe’s Walks offers the only guided historical walking tour of the magnificent seaside resort of Dun Laoghaire. The narrative begins in the 5th century and rambles forward to the 21st century. It’s architecture and cultural development from the early 19th century to the present day is surely unique and still evident for all to see. The guided tour includes but is not restricted to anecdotes and fables about Dun Laoghaire and its people. Its development from a tiny insignificant fishing port in 1767 (old Dunleary) through the building of the magnificent granite harbour and the coming of the railway marks the evolution of this grand old town. Your tour guides will inform you of the significant dates and events that shaped this wonderful place. The Royal visit of King George IV when Dun Laoghaire became Kingstown in 1821 and didn’t revert back to Dun Laoghaire for 100 years is marked by his monument on the seafront. The Victoria fountain is a masterpiece of ironwork and was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s visit to Kingstown in 1900. The walk continues along the magnificent coastline and incorporates monuments to heroes and villains, poets and sailors. A high point of the tour is the view from Joyce’s Tower in Sandycove the site of the opening lines of the world renowned masterpiece Ulyssess by James Joyce. The tour continues further south along the coast to the ancient medieval town of Dalkey and on to Killiney and the magnificent view along the Vico road, often compared to the bay of Naples. Included in this part of the tour is a visit to a 6th/11th century monastic site where for over a thousand years God was worshipped by Danes, Normans and Irish united in one faith. At the end of the tour you can take a short, inexpensive train ride back to Dun Laoghaire.
This guided walk begins at the Dun Laoghaire Tourist Office adjacent to the Town Hall, one minute from the DART/train station/bus station. The tour is suitable for all ages and can be tailored to suit particular needs.
