Family run with homemade food sourced locally and served daily. Live music every weekend.
Friels Bar and Restaurant is a traditional Irish Bar and Restaurant nestled in the heart of the South Derry countryside in the picturesque village of Swatragh.
Currently run by the fourth generation of the Friel family, the bar has been in the family name for over one hundred and fifty years. It is currently run by Dermot & Caitroina.
In the public bar, you will get a real feel of the old world, with pictures and memorabilia of bygone times. The open fire gives a cosy glow and adds to the character of the bar. At Friels, they know how important serving local produce is, so we are loyal to the nearby farmers who supply our meat and fish for our award-winning restaurant. You’ll find Friels beer battered Donegal cod and thick cut gammon steak from the Moores of Lurgan on their menu.
They are a pub that takes pride in serving you in the style of a traditional Irish pub whilst giving you the service you expect from a quality restaurant. Food is served seven days a week from 12:00 noon (09:30 on Saturdays.) Daily specials and Sunday lunches are available from 12:00 to 16:00. Booking is advisable on Sundays to avoid disappointment.
The function suite is ideal for private functions and parties, surprise birthdays, anniversaries, christenings or small weddings can be catered for. With a BBQ beer garden and kids play area, Friels is the perfect place to dine al fresco. Be sure to call in on weekends where local artists perform from 21:30. Check out our Facebook and Instagram page ‘Friels Bar and Restaurant’ to see who’s playing.
Historically, Friels was used as a soup kitchen during the great famine in the 1840s. Be sure to visit their famine corner, home to their original famine pot… a must see if you’re on route to the Causeway Coast.
We are only a 30 minute drive from the Giant's Causeway, The Old Bushmills Distillery, The Dark Hedges and only a 15 minute drive from Seamus Heaney HomePlace.
