Explore the fortifications along the western shores of Lough Neagh and learn about the Great O’Neill
Join us on this fascinating tour with local historian & amateur archaeologist; James Walsh. You will explore the fortifications along the western shores of Lough Neagh and learn how The Great O’Neill fought off the Elizabethan English and the fortifications he built to defend.
You will visit one of Ireland’s finest high crosses at Ardboe, where James will depict the scenes on the cross from the old and new testament – a gift, which has only recently been passed on to James. You will also visit the Hill of the O’Neill at Dungannon, a significant site where Hugh O’Neill lived and defended himself, boasting spectacular view across Mid Ulster.
The next part of the tour will take you to a spiritual site, with much unexplained archaeology; Tullyhogue Fort. This was the inauguration site of The O’Neill, James has a fascinating story to tell about this site and brings with him his sketches of the inauguration and his own interpretations of how the inauguration unfolded.
The final stop of the tour is at Mountjoy Castle, where history changed; it is the very place the Elizabethan Army gained their foothold into County Tyrone.
Tickets are priced at £65pp to include return transport.
The tour departs from Belfast 81- 85 Chichester Street, 10:00 returing approx 18:00.sharp with a pick up at Antrim & Toomebridge on pre-scheduled dates through-out the season.
