Western Regional Fisheries Board, Weir Lodge, Earls Island, Galway, Republic of Ireland
Lough Carra, situated south of Ballintubber, is a limestone lake of around 4000 acres. The lake is very popular with anglers and has an excellent stock of brown trout that average one and a half pounds.
Lough Carra is the largest marlstone lake in Ireland and is part of the Great Western Lakes complex. It is a very well-known wild brown trout fishery with crystal clear water. There is also a good population of pike which is partly controlled by the Western Fisheries Board.
Lough Carra is also of great historical interest. Along its shores stands Moore Hall, the historic home of the Moores and Castleburke, the ruins of the 15th century Norman de Burgo Castle.
