The High and Low Roads

A challenging ride from the slopes of the lower Belfast Hills to the shores of Lough Neagh.
The ride leaves Glenavy by the Crumlin Road then turns right into Glen Road. Continue on Glen Road, which becomes Scroggy Road, and about a mile after Ballymacricket keep left just after passing over the former railway line. In a quarter of a mile, at the main A26 road, turn right then left immediately. At the next crossroads turn left into the Old Moira Road and at the next T junction turn right. Continue uphill and pass straight over the next two crossroads. After crossing the Lisburn Road the ride starts a steady climb, twisting upwards on the Ballymote Road to reach the Tullynewnbank Road. At this T junction turn right and continue upwards to the high point at Cairn Hill (600 feet ASL approx.) After admiring the views off to the left of the Belfast Hills, and Divis Mountain with its radio masts, the ride starts its first descent towards Stoneyford on the Tullynewbank and Ballypitmaeve Roads. Just before Stoneyford turn right into Moss Road and continue to a T junction with the Sheepwalk Road. Turn right and continue to another T junction and turn right. Take the second on the left in approx. half a mile, Lough Road, and in another mile turn left into the (easily missed) Tansy Lane. Take care at the ninety degree bends near the bottom of the descent. At the next T junction turn right and then take the first on the left, Temple Road. Again care is needed on the descent of this narrow road. Continue on Temple Road as it follows a babbling brook then passes underneath the railway line to reach the Ballinderry Road. Look out for an old limekiln on the right too! Turn right and reach the main A26 road. Take care and cross straight over to Upper Ballinderry. After crossing the A26 turn right into Station Road. Continue past the former station and in approx. 2.5 miles reach a crossroads with the B12. Go straight over into Ogales Road and in just over a mile turn left onto Feumore Road. Take the first road on the right, Shore Road, and follow the NCN Route 94 (The Loughshore Trail). Continue to Sandy Bay (50 feet ASL approx.) and along the lough shore turning left at a T junction with the Ballyvannon Road then left onto the Lurgan Road. In just under half a mile turn right into Pigeonstown Road, continue and return to Glenavy by the Crumlin Road.
