The 175th anniversary of The Great Famine (1845-1849)
The bus will depart from the Burnavon, Cookstown at 10:00 with a Pick-up at St Pius School, Magherafelt at 10:20
To mark the 175th anniversary of The Great Famine (1845-1849) which hit Ireland when the staple diet of potatoes succumbed to ‘potato blight’ causing the deaths of about 1 million people and the flight or emigration of up to 2.5 million, we visit the workhouses and paupers’ graves in the area, finishing up in Friels Swatragh where we see an original famine pot and enjoy living history and storytelling over light refreshments.
