At the height of World War II, from which Ireland of course remained neutral, the two biggest voices of propaganda in Europe for both the Allied and the Axis powers were both Irish – albeit of aristocratic extraction.

At the height of World War II, from which Ireland of course remained neutral, the two biggest voices of propaganda in Europe for both the Allied and the Axis powers were both Irish – albeit of aristocratic extraction.

In the UK, Brendan Bracken was the British Minister for Information, and in Germany, the fascist William Joyce was a radio broadcaster nicknamed as Lord Haw-Haw. Double Cross was first staged in the 1980s, and in it, the same actor plays both Bracken and Joyce.

This contemporary re-staging of Double Cross is made all the more pertinent by the revival of propaganda in our daily news feeds, where “fake news” has become an everday accusation, and where truth is on its last legs.
