Across four nights around the Halloween break, Hook Lighthouse will celebrate the festival of Samhain, which traditionally marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark half of the year. Along with Imbolc, Bealtaine, and Lughnasadh, it is one of the four traditional Celtic seasonal festivals.

Families will gather beneath the ever-present beam from the 800-year-old lighthouse to hear about the age-old traditions from the gathered druids. The traditions include, amongst others, the dousing of old fires and the lighting of new fires for the new season. Given that Samhain is aligned with Halloween, there’ll also be scary stories and pumpkin carving for kids.

The lighthouse itself will be offering tours that are lit only by lanterns, so you’ll ascend the 115 steps to the top in darkness, before looking out over the graves of over 1,000 ships. It’s set to be creepy!
