Throughout the whole month of May, the PhotoIreland Festival will be bringing the work of contemporary photographers to a variety of venues around Dublin.

Throughout the whole month of May – and beyond – the PhotoIreland Festival will be bringing the work of contemporary photographers to a variety of venues around Dublin.

This is the ninth edition of the festival, and its theme this year is women’s reproductive rights, which is particularly pertinent given that it is the month when Ireland will be voting on a referendum on whether to allow access to legal abortion in this country.

Amongst the main exhibitions that form the festival is Catalan photographer Laia Abril’s comprehensive work on the history of terminations, titled simply On Abortion, which is the first chapter in a lengthy work called A History of Misogyny.

Elsewhere, Irish photographer Sarah Cullen’s collection, You Shall Have Exactly What You Want, explores the subject of Irish women facing crisis pregnancies.

Many of the shows will take place at The Library Project in Temple Bar with other exhibitions hosted at The Copper House Gallery, Instituto Cervantes, Rathfarnham Castle, and a variety of other venues around the city, with more workshops, portfolio reviews, and talks to be announced in the coming weeks.
