Mary Swanzy is Ireland’s first modernist painter, predating artists like Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett.

Mary Swanzy is Ireland’s first modernist painter, predating artists like Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett. Her reluctance to participate in exhibitions led to her career's progress being stymied however.

She left Ireland aged 15 to complete her studies in France, and witnessed Picasso’s first proto-cubist works at Gertrude Stein’s house in Paris in 1906 while working in the city.

Later she took lessons with Jack Yeats, travelled the world extensively visiting Hawaii, Samoa, and the Balkans, before settling in London. She was frequently outspoken about the struggle women faced in the art world, and as a result her visionary paintings never received the attention which they deserved.

Modern Irish Master is the first extensive retrospective of Swanzy’s work since 1968, which hopes to show her work in a new perspective, and increase the amount of published writing surrounding her life and work.
