An exhibition of contemporary Irish landscape paintings by Deirdre Oram.

Join us for an exhibition of contemporary landscape paintings by artist Deirdre Oram. Living and working on the County Down coast, many of Deirdre’s artworks are informed by this beautiful stretch of coastline and endeavour to capture the moods and nuances of this special place. The exhibition is located at the Graffan Gallery, in the stunning estuary setting of Castle Espie Wetland centre.

Deirdre studied Fine Art at Belfast College of Art before a long teaching career as Head of Art and Design at one of Northern Ireland’s leading grammar schools. Subsequently her creative skills allowed her to pursue work in a number of different fields. In recent years Deirdre has concentrated on paintings, working with a variety of media.

Deirdre has a love of the outdoors and spends much of her time absorbing the beautiful landscape of her native Ireland, with all its nuances. She is never without a camera on walks and travels around our shores, collecting found objects, or sketching and photographing her experiences. Deirdre's paintings combine visual and mental memories with these images. The colours and moods of the unspoiled natural beauty of this Island, sometimes closely observed, or seen in distant vistas, are what inform her work.

Deirdre works outdoors or from her studio, which looks out on to a beautiful stretch of coastline. From it she has dramatic views of the coast and is constantly aware of the ever-changing moods of sea, shore and sky. This is the reason why they feature in so much of her work... she literally spends her life looking at them!

Deirdre was taught ‘paint what you know’ which is what she strives to do. Her feeling that painting is good for the soul applies both to herself as an artist and, she hopes, to anyone who might buy and live with one of her paintings in their home.
