Fanore, Ballyvaughan, Clare,

Walking tour for small groups, on the old herdsman’s mountain track, on private land, away from the main tourist routes, to the centre of the Burren karst landscape, on the Wild Atlantic Way.

This tour is particularly suitable for those who prefer less strenuous routes. We drive to the top of our mountain, using the route taken by the herdsmen of long ago to bring their cattle to the mountain for the winter, thereby eliminating the strenuous climb. From here we guide you on a 4 mile looped walk over on our private farm track around the top of the mountain. This is a unique experience away from the main tourist routes on private lands cresting altitudes of 300m.

The views of the Clare coastline along the Wild Atlantic Way are breadth taking. From the western mountain edge you will have unparalleled views of Galway Bay, the Aran Islands, The 12 Bens Mountain Range of Connemara and Salthill/Galway city. Beneath you observe the well preserved 16th century tower house, Gleninagh Castle, home of the O’Loughlin’s and the nearby Rhine Peninsula. Travelling inland towards the centre of the mountain observe and the vast expanse of limestone paving in this karst landscape. Enjoy the tranquillity of the Burren and the magical energy of the limestone paving.

Experience the splendid isolation of the burren, far from the crowded tourist spots below. There are relics everywhere of mountain life thousands of year ago, such as forts, turf tiles, and magnificent examples of hand built stone walls, a tradition continued to day. You will see the fertile Cahir Valley and the Cahir river, the only continuous over ground river in the entire Burren, from aspects previous reserved for locals.

Travel in comfort while learning about the wonderful archaeology, history, habitat and farming in the Burren mountain from the people who now farm it. From early spring the mountain is like a flower garden and you will learn about the exotic mix of flowers that thrive here from different habitats and climate zones. This is a botanist’s haven.
This tour gives universal access to the Burren highlands, previously reserved for those with the ability to walk such strenuous routes.

The tour is ideal for those who may not have the time or physical ability to cover this track entirely on foot. The tour is perfect for nature lovers, those looking for something unique and families interested in enjoying a once in a life time experience. Small groups only – up to 7 at one time. Tailored tours and educations tours by appointment.
