While the Arabic culture has Hammam, Ireland too has a traditional well being treatment which dates back hundreds of years and has been utilised to cure ailments from arthritis, rheumatism, eczema, psoriasis to detoxification of the body and de-stressing the mind. Seaweed is full of essential minerals which when soaked in boiling seawater allow all the minerals and goodness to be absorbed by the body. It is also an invaluable aid to promote a good night's sleep.
Firstly bathers sit in their communal steam room to open the pores so the seaweeds nutrients can be properly absorbed. Following this one takes a private bath of hot Atlantic seawater in which fresh hand harvested seaweed has been infusing while in the steam room. Visitors then lie back and relax and let their body absorb the essential nutrients while looking out over the majestic mountains and Fjord of Leenane listening to soft ambient music. This is relaxation at its very best. Finally when visitors are finished bathing they stand upright in the bath and pull the fresh water chord which 30 seconds of cool fresh spring water from the mountain and closes the pores to lock in the mighty nutrients.
Connemara is popular with many outdoor pursuits from walking, mountain climbing, cycling, diving and boating. What better way to finish off the day and ease those muscles. Connemara Seaweed Baths have become a haven with walkers, tired from their day on the mountains in the soft rain. Seawater bathing helps to reinvigorate tired and aching muscles, warms the body and relaxes the mind. Due to the fact that quantities of Iodine are present in the bathing water they are unsuitable for persons who suffer from Thyroid problems. Due to the ambient heat, pregnant women, and those suffering from high blood pressure and heart problems are not permitted to bathe.
