Cult star Ariel Pink makes a long-awaited return to Dublin in support of last year’s dreamy album Dedicated to Bobby Jameson.
Cult star Ariel Pink makes a long-awaited return to Dublin in support of his dreamy 2017 album, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. Local indie promoters Skinny Wolves, who have been responsible two previous visits from Ariel Pink way back in 2006 and again in 2009, are bringing him with band in tow to the Button Factory this August.
Ariel Pink’s career remains a source of fascination. He began as an outsider artist who recorded soft-rock and ’80s pop-inspired jams on a eight-track cassette recorder, and then released them himself.
In 2004 he released Doldrums on Animal Collective’s Paw Tracks label which won him more widespread attention in the indie rock world, before spending the rest of the decade reissuing his lo-fi home-recorded albums on a variety of labels.
In 2010 he teamed up with 4AD Records and produced his most mature world to date, Before Today, featuring the instant classic Round and Round, as well as much higher production values in general.
Despite the sheen of respectability, Ariel Pink remains an enigma with encyclopaedic knowledge of the pop song format and a wide abrasive streak. Expect the unexpected.
