Beara, West Cork, Allihies, Cork,
The annual Michael Dwyer Festival. A traditional music festival in an intimate setting on the Wild Atlantic Way.
This festival has taken place successfully for the last twenty years promoting traditional music in the Beara Peninsula. It successfully commemorates the late Beara musician and composer, Michael Dwyer, who came from a well known musical family. His family, including brothers Richard Dwyer and John Dwyer, both renowned musicians in their own right, take part every year. There is much community participation by local musicians and school children through a variety of performances including sessions, competitions and workshops during the
three day event.
As the festival dates draw closer there are to reasons to getting excited about this year's program
The festival will open with a CD launch with Sean Wholihan, who has included a lot of Michael Dwyer's tunes in his CD.
Paddy Keenan from the Bothy band is headlining this year's concert in the Mine Museum together with Alan Burke.John and Richard Dwyer will be centre stage in the second half together with Richard Lucey, Leah Murphy and Mary Donegan.
Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch will play at the concert in the Allihies hostel on Sunday. Always a treat...
Ceili All Stars and Sister Bernadette will be entertaining us on Friday night and Murphy's Men will be playing till the early hours on Saturday night.
Not forgetting the Cork Singers Club and all the pub gigs and art exhibitions, there should be something there for everybody.
This year's workshops include whistle, fiddle, mandolin/banjo and singing
And of course the tin whistle competition is going ahead again this year.
These are only some of the highlights of this year's festival. There are session trails, set dancing, art exhibitions and many more impromptu events to look forward to.
