Real Cider Making & Harvest Lunch

To coincide with the apple harvest, Longueville House marks this special occasion by hosting a Real Cider Making walk, talk & tour of the cider house and on-site distillery. Learn the ancient art of cider making followed by traditional Sunday Lunch.

At Longueville House, their cider apples (Dabinett & Michelin) are grown on their extensive 30 acres of bio-dynamic orchards. Under the guidance of William O’Callaghan owner and Longueville’s Master Brandy Distiller and Cider Maker, Dan Duggan, you will discover the pleasure and excitement of the real cider making process. As you stroll through the orchards, talk all things apples (history, origins, varieties, etc.), helping participants to understand the major differences between small batch, real ciders and mass produced commercial ciders. In the cider mill, you will see the apples being pressed, where they then leave the apple juice to ferment naturally.

After the tour, back in the House an autumnal hot cider will greet you in the drawing room. William and head Chef, James Cullinane, will prepare a special lunch which includes what is in season, freshly harvested and picked from the Walled Kitchen Garden and Estate all washed down with lashings of Longueville House Cider. A real treat for all cider enthusiasts.

Here’s what happens –

Participants meet at Longueville House, welcomed by freshly brewed tea and coffee in the drawing room, where you will see and smell the aromas of the traditional Sunday roast being cooked over the open oak log fire. A brief introduction to Guides and maps of the Longueville Estate orchards are distributed. Participants are encouraged to bring wellies or hiking boots and layered clothing for extra comfort. Group then sets off with guides for an educational talk and tour of our orchards, cider house and distillery.

The group returns to the House for a comfort break and to freshen up, followed by a welcome glass of our traditional hot cider or homemade apple juice.

Served in Presidents’ Restaurant and Turner Conservatory, the highlight of the day is the legendary luncheon consisting of an extensive starter, dessert and cheese buffet with all the ingredients sourced from Longueville House Gardens, Estate & local farmers. Your main course, the roast, which has been cooked on the open fire or the Castletownbere freshly caught fish will be served to you at your table. An imaginative vegetarian option is always available.

€85 includes Walled Garden walk, talk, tour, tastings and luncheon with cocktail, ciders & apple brandy.
