The round tower found near Castletown-Kinneigh, County Cork is one of about 60 such towers surviving in Ireland. It’s believed to have been built between 900 and 1050, though an upper section was added in the mid-19th century.
In County Cork, visitors will find only two examples of round towers, one near the villages of Sleenoge and Enniskeane, adjacent to a monastery founded by St Colman.
The Kinneigh Round Tower has a unique, 5m-high hexagonal base. Though the structure is thought to date back to the 10th or 11th century, in the mid-19th century an upper section was added to make a belfry.
