Killruddery, Bray, Wicklow,
The Visitor & Event Manager
Killruddery House is a large historic house near Bray in County Wicklow. Dating from 1618, it's now a working estate with a walled garden project, open gardens, tours, a tearoom and a full events program.
Often described as the perfect destination for an escape, Killruddery House in County Wicklow has been home to the Brabazon family (the Earls of Meath) since 1618. Conveniently located on the outskirts of the capital where Dublin meets Wicklow, this historic house presents an opportunity to discover one of Leinster’s hidden gems.
The present structure is a south-facing mansion, originally dating from the 17th century, but remodelled and refurbished in 1820 in the Elizabethan style. Constructed in the shape of an irregular quadrangle enclosing a courtyard, to the south and west lies a large domed conservatory. The house sits within a large landscaped demesne that features two long parallel canals.
The original grand entrance and dome was demolished in the 1950s and the house was remodeled by Claud Phillimore. Currently the estate extends to 800 acres and is owned by the 15th Earl and Countess of Meath. Killruddery House estate has been used as a shooting location for many movies and TV mini-series, including My Left Foot, Far and Away, Angela’s Ashes, The Tudors and Camelot.
The house interior includes elaborate chimney pieces by Giacinto Micali, crimson silk damask from Spitalfields, stained glass by John Milner, a domed ceiling by Henry Popje and the wonderful drawing room ceiling by Simon Gilligan, who worked for Popje. The clock tower in the forecourt houses a water clock designed and constructed by Normand, the 13th Earl of Meath.
An annual programme of events at Killruddery House features everything from falconry and beekeeping, to outdoor concerts and children’s events. Visit Killruddery House for the perfect family outing within easy reach of Dublin.
