San Francisco, CA's Wooden Shjips, long-time leaders of the contemporary psychedelic music movement, will visit Whelan's this September for one night only.
Laid-back and summery yet filled with rhythmic tension, their songs are both anthem and antidote, as easy to be amped by as spaced out to. Their first single, Staring At The Sun, is a testament to the group's experimentation and dedication to the groove as ever there was one – all eight meandering, thrumming minutes of it.
The quartet, comprising Omar Ahsanuddin, Dusty Jermier, Nash Whalen and Ripley Johnson, have been playing together since 2006, quickly gathering a following of fans looking for something beyond the three-and-change limitations of radio rock. Melodic and soaring, tracks like Eclipse and Red Line take us on a journey that seems tailor-made to counteract the anxious effects of living in the modern world.
Wooden Shjips' latest record, V., named as a tribute to the peace sign, is a masterpiece of nonviolent resistance. Catch them live at Whelan's to feel it for yourself.
