Angling in Lough Boora

Beautifully situated in the wilds of County Offaly not far from Tullamore, is Lough Boora Discovery Park, a mecca for anglers in Ireland. With a number of excellent fishing lakes on-site, visitors looking for angling opportunities will find everything they need for the perfect adventure break in Ireland. Areas of Lough Boora came out of commercial peat production in the 1980s and a number of still water fishing lakes were developed, as both local and tourist amenities. The lakes were created by excavating the remaining peat, deepening the lake bottom, reinforcing the banks and landscaping the environment. When the lakes were flooded, aquatic plants were introduced from waterways nearby and the lakes were stocked with a variety of game and coarse fish. Since its development, each lake has undergone rapid naturalisation and access roads, parking and picnic facilities have been developed. The creation of this complex of angling lakes has led to the designation of nearby Kilcormac Village as a new coarse angling centre. Angling at Boora Lake, a coarse fishing lake of just under five hectares, takes place south of Loch an Dochais on the western side of the Lough Boora Discovery Park Cycle Path road. It holds good stocks of adult tench over four pounds in weight, as well as roach. Loch an Dochais hosts the all-Ireland competition for disabled anglers each year—an exceptional coarse fishing lake, it has proven popular with families and is an excellent spot in which to teach children to fish. The Finnamore Lakes comprise two lakes, developed in 1996 and stocked with carp, tench, rudd and bream. Lough Clochan is a four-hectare angling lake developed and stocked with rainbow trout, with fly-fishing permitted on the lake on a ‘put and take’ basis by Cloghan Angling Club. While there is no closed season for angling at Lough Boora Discovery Park, best results are experienced between April and October.
