Situated in the picturesque medieval village of Carlingford County Louth, Carlingford Design House is a unique venue showcasing the best of Irish craft. Established by Garrett Mallon, an award winning Irish jeweller, this newly opened venue has become a central hub for creativity in the area. After training and working in London and Dublin Garrett up his first studio on the shores of Carlingford Lough in 2002 where he created work that is sold throughout quality outlets in Ireland, the UK and USA. In 2014 he moved his workshop to a purpose built, open to view premises in Carlingford Design House, and here visitors are able to view Garrett creating his work at his jeweller’s bench view and purchase from his extensive jewellery collections on display. Garrett has a wide ranging array of notable commissions in his portfolio, and there is a dedicated area within Carlingford Design House to showcase some of the exhibition pieces and public commissions he has undertaken. He also undertakes personal commissions for bespoke pieces. Within his studio Garrett runs a small jewellery school offering short courses and weekend workshops teaching jewellery making skills, with students learning how to make their own pendant and earrings for example. He also runs Make Your Own Wedding Ring workshops for couples who will spend a day with him designing and making their own wedding bands. Carlingford Design House is also home to a retail gallery hosting the work from 45 other designer makers from around Ireland. Garrett has selected work from makers in a wide range of disciplines such as ceramics, textiles, wood, glass, candles etc which represent the very best of Irish craft. There is work from makers within the Louth Craftmark Designers Network which Garrett is heavily involved with, but you will also find candles from Kilkenny and Cork, glass from Kerry, knitwear from Donegal, ceramics from Tyrone, jewellery from Fermanagh and the list goes on! Every product is handmade within Ireland, and when you visit, Garrett and his team are able to give you the background to the work and let you know about the maker which all adds to the unique experience of a visit to the gallery. An ideal place to shop for presents or a treat for yourself, there is something for everyone and to suit all budgets. A central theme behind Carlingford Design House is to educate the public about craft and encourage visitors to participate. Create @Carlingford Design House is a purpose built classroom overlooking the King John’s Castle and Carlingford Harbour. During the year there are craft and art classes run for adults and children in areas such as ceramics, needlefelt, silk painting, corsage making, drawing, digital photography and much more. In addition to courses there are summer schools and events during mid term but they also cater for bespoke groups including small hen parties.
