The West Cork Chamber Music Festival takes place in Bantry, Co. Cork and runs from 28 June – 7 July. It is the most impressive celebration of chamber music in Ireland including musicians, masters and students, established composers and apprentices, string players and wind players, solo sopranos and vocal consorts, pianists and harpsichordists, Baroque ensembles both national and international, young prize-winners and living legends, all gather in Bantry (population 2,722) for ten days of intense music-making. There are up to six concerts each day plus up to four ninety-minute masterclasses, a series of pop-up Fringe events, public artist interviews and talks and a major exhibition of Irish and international string instrument-makers and bow-makers. There is even a class on what to look for when choosing an instrument.
In addition to the 45 concerts in the main Festival, a series of Fringe concerts and pop-ups will take place in different settings in the area – islands, churches, a library, local shops, an arts centre, a tourist office and other unlikely locations. The musicians will be a mixture of main Festival performers and masterclass students.
The West Cork Chamber Music Festival is generously supported by the Arts Council, Failte Ireland and the Crespo Foundation. More details on website.
