The Dublin Jazz Co-Op’s regular Sunday evening slot in The Workman’s Club welcomes a trio composed of guitarist Mike Nielsen, bassist Cormac O’Brien, and drummer Shane O’Donovan this June.

Nielsen is a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston, and also has written a PhD in the field of microtonal music. Microtonal music is that which uses note divisions smaller than the widely used 12-note equal tempered scale which forms the basis of the Western music. While certain composers explored this area, such as Charles Ives in the first part of the 20th century, it remains largely unchartered territory.

Nielsen is a prolific composer of contemporary jazz music, as well as a designer of his own microtonal guitars, which often require unique fretboard arrangements, and developing his own system of notation for his microtonal works.
