The White House Hostel is situated on Markievicz Road and the Garavogue River, only five minutes’ walk from Sligo Town centre. It provides dormitory, family and double rooms, and is located near many of the town’s main attractions.
The White House Hostel is situated on the banks of the river Garavogue in the town of Sligo, Sligo translates from old Gaelic meaning the shelly place. Sligo is known as “The Land of heart’s desire” and is synonymous with the writings of William Butler Yeats, local place names such as Lissadell , Glencar, Drumcliffe, Lough Gill, Hazelwood and the lake Isle of Inisfree are celebrated in his poetry.
Sligo has lots to do, and a stopover at the White House Hostel will afford the traveller the opportunity to hear an abundance of the locally produced music, both traditional and contemporary that Sligo is noted for. While in Sligo, a visit to the Model Arts and Niland Gallery is a must, here on permanent exhibition are the works of internationally renowned Artist Jack B. Yeats.
The hostel is just minutes from shops, pubs, restaurants and the local railway/bus station. It is also walking distance to the Sligo Museum, Hawkswell Theatre and Yeats Memorial Building.
The White House Hostel is ideally situated for exploring Sligo Town’s main attractions. It can be found along the River Garavogue estuary, just 300m from the town centre. It has been accommodating travellers since 1986, and features dormitory, family and twin rooms.
Sligo was settled as far back as 5000 years ago and has some of the best examples of Neolithic and megalithic monuments in the country, including Queen Medbh’s grave on top of Knockrea Mountain.
This makes it an ideal location from which the budget traveller can explore Sligo.
