This Apple Blossom weekend call in to Dan Winter’s House and enjoy a tour and some amazing tastes! You will see Mrs Jean Patterson making soda bread and potato apple bread on the old griddle over the open turf fire in the farmhouse kitchen. Why not enjoy a taste or take a treat home?
Making soda bread, soda farls and potato apple turnover or apple potato bread were an everyday chore in our Grandmother’s day. The Soda bread would have been made each morning for breakfast and the Potato apple in the Autumn when the apples were ready. Potato apple bread was made especially for the children coming home from school or with butter and sugar on it for after dinner on a Sunday.
Dan Winter’s Cottage is nestled right in the heart of the Orchard County. This early 18th century listed vernacular farmhouse was re-thatched and restored in 2000, conserving a large proportion of the original fabric. The cottage has been maintained by the Winter family down the years and on display are the relics from the Battle of the Diamond, old farming and dairy artefacts. The original timber, used to build the cottage, has just been dated to reveal this is probably one of the last houses to use oak as building timber.
