For 2017, Reg is introducing a range of themed walking tours that provide a unique perspective on Dublin in terms of its architecture, culture and heritage. This is a unique, bespoke offering, organised in association of a number of the foremost cultural institutions in the City, including the Royal Irish Academy, Marsh’s Library and the Royal College of Physicians.
Tours operate regularly throughout the week, from May to September and normal start time is 11:00 from the City Centre. Please note that, where they apply, entry charges are included in the tour fee.
Historic Libraries & Special Collections
In this is unique, bespoke tour you visit a cluster of Historic Libraries around Dublin City Centre including the Royal Irish Academy, the National Library of Ireland, Marsh's Library, the Royal College of Physicians, and the Chester Beatty.
Also included is the Edward Worth library housed in the historic 18th century Dr Steeven's hospital. This is a great tour for those with an interest in antiquarian books as a reader or collector. The tour also provides a unique perspective on a neglected aspect of Dublin's literary culture. Please note this is a 3 hour tour.
Public Sculpture Trail
In the course of the Tour you explore the great Irish sculptural tradition that has its roots in the Eighteenth century Georgian City. The itinerary takes in a wide range of sculptural locations, some in full view and others not so obvious. Reg talks about historic sculptural subjects, the buildings they decorate or dominate and the associated iconography. Sites include the lavishly decorated Custom House by James Gandon, plus Trinity College and College Green. The walk also includes a short visit to Dublin City Hall, one of Dublin’s finest Neo-Classical buildings, where the interior presents a masterclass in the work of John Hogan, perhaps the greatest of the 19th century Irish sculptors. A short walk takes us to Dublin Castle where, among other locations, you will view Francis Johnston’s Neo-Gothic Chapel Royal featuring lavishly external sculptural decoration, the work of Edward and John Smyth. The tour concludes at medieval Christchurch Cathedral, with its unique assemblage of elaborate memorials, the work of John Van Nost and others.
Liberties Insider Tour
In the course of the Tour you uncover the Liberties historic and former industrial quarter of Dublin, visiting key sites and historic buildings, recalling the lives of the numerous famous and even notorious characters who lived, worked and died around here in times past. You will access a number of Historic and industrial sites that are normally closed to the public including, for example, Tailor's Hall, Power’s Distillery and St Werburgh's, widely regarded as the City's finest 18th century church.
