But now he’s back in Ireland for One Direction’s sell-out concerts in Dublin’s
Croke Park, and his tweets have turned to thoughts of home: "Next stop my home show! Can't believe I'm saying this! 'Croke park' baby ! Xxxx"
Billion Dollar Boyband
Life has got HUGE for Niall and One Direction since first introduced to the world stage in 2010: the band is now on its second world tour, catapulting the group into the realms of musical history in the making (Midnight Memories sold four million copies just five weeks into release, and Take Me Home debuted at number one in 36 countries!)
Kissed by Dustin Hoffman
Niall in particular seems to have won the hearts of many a fair maiden. While he might be second* to Harry in terms of Twitter followers, his 1D doll sold the most in 2012 – and he’s the only one to have been kissed by Dustin Hoffman!
A little more about the blond superstar from Mullingar
Turning 21 on 13 September 2014, Niall was born in Mullingar, County
Westmeath. He has one older brother, Greg, and the pair lived with their father after his parents split up. Niall went to school at Coláiste Mhuire Mullingar, where he began his singing career in the school choir! He also played guitar.
The Westmeath man started out on the road to success when he was chosen to be the support act for fellow X Factor alumni Lloyd Daniels when he played
Dublin. He went on to audition for the talent show himself in 2010 – and the rest, as they say, is history.
So where does Niall hang when at home?
Despite all the adulation, Niall never forgets his roots. He admitted to being homesick in the band’s movie, This is Us. For this latest tour, though, he’s flying his friends and family to join him on some of his tour dates – not surprising as he’s been on tour most of last and this year so far!
So when he does get back, where does he hang out? Well, if other flying visits are anything to go by, he could pop into Danny Byrne’s pub for lunch, and swing a club at both the Mullingar Golf Club and the Mullingar Park Hotel. He could also entertain with a performance of the ‘Mullingar Shuffle’ – after all, he’s done it before, when he joined Irish Olympic silver medallist boxer John Joe Nevin at Cusack Park!
Niall pulling pints at Danny Byrne's, Mullingar And for the record
Niall’s not the only Mullingar man who’s warbled his way to the top: Ireland’s answer to Tom Jones was one Joe Dolan. The late legend had so many fans that there’s a Dolan Gathering Bachelor Festival held in his honour. Ladies once swooned over Joe, much like they do over Niall Horan today.
There must be something in the Mullingar air that produces these legendary singers.
Pay County Westmeath a visit and you might just discover what it is.
