Crossgar translates from the Irish An Chrois Ghearr as the short cross and is located on the main A7 road between Saintfield and Downpatrick. According to history it was likely that Crossgar was the ecclesiastical centre of this part of County Down around 800 AD. Tobar Mhuire (Mary’ Well) was purchased by the Passionist Order in 1950 and in 1976 became a Noviciate where people are encouraged to deepen their vocation to religious life. Crossgar Free Presbyterian Church is the first congregation of the Free Presbyterian denomination worldwide. It was founded in 1951. Crossgar boasts a 9 hole golf course. It is also home to Ireland’s first Disc Golf course located on the Kilmore Road. Sir James Martin, the famous inventor of the ejector seat for aircraft, has a memorial stone located in The Square in Crossgar.
