Butlers Glen Loop
- View as map
Butlers Glen Loop is a walk for fit experienced walkers only. Starting at the spectacularly located car park on the north side of the Gap of Mamore, this route takes the walker into the heart of Inishowen's finest hills.
A-B. Leaving the trailhead at the car park follow the purple and green arrows as the loop follows an old bog road uphill. The green arrows are for a one-way trek to Straid and Clonmany. Continue to follow the purple and green arrows as the loop follows a mix of bog road and hillside track for over 3km. On a col between Crockmain (on your left) and Slievekeeragh (on your right) the loop reaches a waymarker which turns you right to cross a flat open section. You will be returning to this point later – for now turn right, leaving the green trek as you do.
B-C. After 250m the loop veers left and climbs onto the shoulder of Slievekeeragh. Follow the purple arrows along a hillside track for approx 3km before making a very steep descent and joining a stony bog road in Butler’s Glen. Turn left here to begin the homeward journey.
C-B-A. Continue to follow the purple arrows as the loop follows the bog road up through Butler’s Glen. The road ends after 2km and you follow hillside tracks for another 1km to reach the junction mentioned at B above. This time you continue straight. Now you follow the tracks and bog roads of your outward journey to descend again to the trailhead.
