Carrigaholt Bay, the first safe harbour for boats travelling up the Shannon River, provides good shelter in high winds and is defined by two quays the southern of which is overlooked by a 15th century towerhouse. While both piers are used by fishing boats only the southern pier, also known as the new pier, it is fully perational on a commercial basis serving fishing boats and dolphin watching boats.
