This lecture on one of the most spectacular artefacts from Early Christian Ireland will reveal stories of how National Museum staff undertook an excavation to find missing pieces from the chalice and lots more.

In 1980 a hoard of altar chalices dating back to the 9th Century was found at Derrynaflan, Co Tipperary. The most exquisite of the pieces is now known as the Derrynaflan Chalice.

Hear Dr Michael Ryan discuss how and why the chalice was made, and how it relates to other chalices of medieval times.
