Visit Caherconnell Stone Fort, a 1,500 year old structure in the Burren near Carron, County Clare. The visitor centre presents Ireland's first virtual tour of a stone fort, complete with details of both its history and dweller's lives.

Winner of the 2012 FBD-Clare Business Excellence Award for Best Tourism Hospitality in Clare-Caherconnell Fort & Visitor Centre, near Carron and Ballyvaughan in County Clare, is one of the best preserved stone forts in the Burren. This impressive structure, which measures 45 metres in diameter and is protected by a 3 metres high wall, was built 1500 years ago. The visitor centre provides an informative 20 minute audio-visual presentation on the fort, its inhabitants, its rich history and archaeology.

Learn about the lives the former inhabitants and the stories they told in the shadow of the great stone fort. Ongoing excavations by the International Archaeological Field School during the months of June, July, and August each year have yielded fascinating results, enhancing Caherconnell's reputation as a prominent archaeological site.

The Audio-Visual Presentation and Graphic Panels Display deal with the unique history of the Burren's tombs and monuments, including Poulnabrone Dolmen. Unearth the surrounding stone pathway's past by taking a tour and following a map with field notes, supplied by archaeologist and Field School Director, Dr. Michelle Comber (NUIG).

Presentations are also available in French, German, Dutch and Italian.

A visit to Caherconnell Fort may also include the very popular Sheep Dog Demonstrations, which run on a daily basis, May-September.The Mountain Haven Café provides a welcome break, where the explorer can enjoy some lunch, sample delicious farm fresh food, home baking and freshly ground coffee. Combine all three and you can spend the morning or evening relaxing in one of the worlds most unique and beautiful landscapes.
