See what Ireland has in store for you
Located 13km off the coast of Cork, Cape Clear Island is Ireland's southernmost inhabited island. Only 5km long and 2km wide, the Gaeltacht island is a stunning haven for native flora, fauna and history. Wander the entire island for sights of the beautiful heather, gorse and wildflowers that cover the rugged hills. Keep a keen eye out for the wildlife, both in the skies and in the ocean, for the appearance of rare migratory birds, whales and, of course, the friendly dolphins that peak out along the coastline. Or include some unforgettable historical sites on your stroll of the craggy cliffs. Meander through the Megalithic standing stones and admire the 5,000-year-old passage grave. Don't forget about the ruins of a 12th century church and the 14th century castle which give a glimpse into the rich culture of past islanders. Alongside its gorgeous scenery, Cape Clear Island is also known for its people. Chat with members of the friendly, bilingual community of islanders and pick up a few phrases of Irish (Gaeilge). They are sure to welcome you with open arms, adding to the calm and relaxing atmosphere on the island.
