This is a professional organisation whose policy is the promotion of film culture in Ireland and the preservation of and accessibility to Irelands film heritage. The Irish Film Centre houses two cinemas and the Irish Film Archive.
The Irish Film Institute is Ireland’s national cultural institution for film established in 1943. It provides audiences throughout Ireland with access to the finest independent, Irish and international cinema; it preserves and promotes Ireland’s moving image heritage through the IFI Irish Film Archive, and provides opportunities for audiences of all ages and backgrounds to learn and critically engage with film.
The IFI consists of three cinemas, a film shop and a fully licensed Café Bar open 7 days a week. It also has a library and the IFI Irish Film Archive vaults which have over 30,000 cans of film stored in its Temple Bar Premises. Located in a historic old Quaker building in the heart of Temple Bar, the IFI is an oasis for both film fans or anyone just looking for a bite to eat in comfortable surroundings. The Café Bar has high-quality yet affordable options for lunch and dinner, or patrons can relax with a drink in its fully- stocked bar.
The IFI regularly hosts high profile directors and stars from the film world. Past guest Q&A’s include stars such as Jim Sheridan, Daniel Day Lewis, or Juliette Binoche and as the home of film in Ireland, it has a long-standing relationship with the Irish Film Industry, regularly hosting film premieres. Annually, it hosts a broad spectrum of film festivals ranging in theme from the IFI Family Festival (August 24-26), IFI Documentary Film Festival (September 27-30), IFI Horrorthon (October 25-29) and, of course, its flagship event, the IFI French Film Festival (November 14-25).
For those interested in Irish heritage, visitors have the chance to attend FREE lunchtime screenings at Archive at Lunchtime, which shows gems programmed from the IFI Irish Film Archive; and From the Vaults a monthly screening of a feature film from the Archive. www.ifi.ie.
