The Maltings Bed and Breakfast is a wonderful, character filled home from home situated in the designated Irish Heritage town of Birr, County Offaly. Owned and run by Maeve Garry and her family, the relaxed atmosphere is one of friendliness and homeliness, with a generous Irish welcome always guaranteed.

The accommodation itself consists of six en suite bedrooms decorated to a high standard. Each bedroom has TV and tea/coffee making facilities as standard and all bedrooms have a riverside setting which means peace, serenity and a great night’s sleep is assured.
A delicious breakfast, served in the river side dining room is also guaranteed to set you up for the day, whether it consists of exploring the numerous attractions locally, relaxing or onward travel. Maeve prides herself on providing a wide selection of breakfast options. With the traditional cooked full Irish breakfast, homemade omelettes continental breakfast (cereals, nuts, hams, cheeses, fruits) and homemade breads, scones and pastries all on the menu, all your wishes are catered for.

There is also a cosy living room with TV, WiFi, books and games and a computer available for guests use.
The Maltings Bed and Breakfast itself took its name for its former incarnation as a 19th century malt store. Originally constructed circa 1810 as a malt store for the Guinness Company and lovingly converted to its current form in 1994, the building really is an attraction in itself. Located immediately beside and in the shadow of Birr Castle, The Maltings really is an idyllic setting for the weary traveller or active adventurer to rest and relax. At the back of the property, a private river terrace overlooks the River Brosna and the neighbouring mature Irish Woods of Birr Castle. This truly is a haven of tranquillity and wildlife and is the perfect place to spend a few midsummer hours.

Located in Birr, The Maltings provides easy access to one of Ireland’s best and most carefully preserved Georgian Towns with all the architectural splendour one would expect. Birr Castle a five minute walk from The Maltings, is the highlight of any trip to Birr. With a history dating back to the 16th Century, the castle remains inhabited to this day as the seat of the Earls of Rosse. Birr Castle Demesne is open to tourists all year round and boasts the Leviathan of Parsonstown, an astronomical telescope, which was until 1917, the largest of its kind in the world and also Europe’s highest tree-house. The gardens themselves contain many fine trees and shrubs set in a landscaped park with waterfalls, a river and lake.

Whether it is an overnight stay or longer, a visit to Birr and a stay at the Maltings Bed and Breakfast, guarantees to be a memorable one.
