South Carolina’s Ben Folds shot to fame with his nerdy, wisecracking band Ben Folds Five – they were of course a trio – whose sound melded the melodic sensibilities of big-time pop piano players like Billy Joel and Elton John, with hints of alternative rock’s harder edge.
Folds’ lyrics were often wry and poked fun at cultures he was on the outside of, but he could also craft a devastating ballad, such as on the notable break-out hit Brick.
Since breaking up the band in the year 2000, he has made several solo albums and collaborated featuring acapella groups, orchestras, and even the novelist Nick Hornby.
However he will always be best known for his piano-playing and songwriting, and this solo piano gig at Vicar Street will be the perfect opportunity to witness Ben Folds in his most comfortable environment.
