Moyasta Junction, Kilrush, Clare,
Mr. Jackie Whelan
Visit the famous West Clare Railway, immortalised in song by Percy French. The Heritage Centre is located at the original Moyasta junction station house between Kilrush and Kilkee in County Clare.
"Are you right there Michael, are you right?" those famous Percy French lyrics for many conjure up images of the famous West Clare Railway.
Although closed in 1961, the Moyasta Junction Station House and 2km of the old narrow-guage line, in Kilrush County Clare, have now been restored. The old railway line once again echoes with the sounds of train whistles and steam engines.
Slieve Callan, which was formerly on display on a plinth in Ennis railway station, returned to Moyasta in 2009 and now both the Slieve Callan and a CIE diesel engine alternate duties on the West Clare line.
A visit to the West Clare Railway offers young and young-at-heart a fun and nostalgic outing while special excursions at Halloween and Christmas make for a unique family experience.
Restored train carriages now house a ticket office and coffee shop which display the Percy French memorabilia.
Nearby is the Poulnasheery Bay with its wonderful wildlife habitats and the unique Monmore Boglands with their rare flora.
The West Clare Railway and heritage centre is open from 1 June to 31 August 2015.
