The Hugh Lane is pleased to present Prototypes, a multi-screen film installation by Berlin-based Irish artist Doireann O’Malley, who is emerging as a new voice in the current generation of artists.

O’Malley’s work proposes to generate new forms of knowledge, drawing on a wide range of feminist perspectives including queer theory, psychoanalysis, quantum physics, genetics, and cybernetics. The artist ties her research to the phantoms of modernist utopias, epitomised by the post-war architecture of Berlin and merges science fiction, bio-politics and psychoanalysis through a dreamlike backdrop for her ghostly protagonists.

In her films, O’Malley visually breaks with narrative realism to create a multilayered tableau which allows the viewer to reconsider the underlying social forces at play in human interaction. Her focus on transgender female to male identities and the transition process also invites us to address wider philosophical concerns relating to biology, embodiment, sexuality, utopianism and bio-molecular advancement in human evolution.
