The Short-Stay Visa Waiver Scheme was introduced in July 2011 to encourage tourism from the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to the island of Ireland. The UK visa requires a once off validation in the UK before it can be used directly to enter Ireland.
What nationalities are covered?
Nationals of the following countries are included in the programme:
GCC Countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia
Eastern Europe: Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Russian Federation, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine
Other Asian Countries: India, Kazakhstan, Peoples Republic of China, Thailand, Uzbekistan
Rules of Short Stay Visa Waiver Program:
Under the Programme, persons
(i) who are nationals of one of seventeen countries covered by the scheme,
(ii) who have entered the UK on foot of a UK ‘C’ General visa, and
(iii) have been granted leave to remain in the UK for up to 180 days,
(iv) travel to Ireland and
(v) be granted permission to remain in Ireland up to a maximum of 90 days or the time left on their UK leave to remain, whichever is the shorter.
