Foynes in County Limerick has an extremely rich aviation history which the world class Foynes Air Show pays tribute to each summer.

For a period in the 1930s and ’40s, Foynes — then known as the Shannon Airport — became the centre of the aviation world, as it was home to Transatlantic flight, being as it was the nearest suitable European landfall to New York City. It also has a legitimate claim to being the home of the Irish Whiskey, as they concoction was created to soothe the nerves of agitated passengers.

The Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum is housed in the building where the terminal stood at the airport, documenting that heritage.

The Foynes Air Show is a unique day out that features both contemporary planes as well as vintage ones, and is a fun day out for all the family, with plenty of entertainment on the ground as well as in the sky.
