Three eighteenth century barns tastefully and imaginatively renovated to four star standard. Overlooking the "Narrows" and Strangford Lough. The Strangford Lough area is steeped in history. It boasts fifth century early Christian associations with the presence of St. Patrick around Downpatrick and the Lecale area. Its coastline is dotted with abbey ruins and early Christian sites which were ruined by Vikings in the ninth and tenth centuries. Thereafter is a Norman legacy of fortified castles and houses around parts of the Lough all associated with the De Courcy family and their feudal retainers.
The barns are on the southern tip of the Ards Peninsula, three and a half miles south of Portaferry situated on Barr Hall Bay, a seal basking location protected by the National Trust. The bay is a haven for overwintering waders, lapwings, oyster catchers, and a multitude of gulls.
The Barns overlook the Narrows and the Barmouth with its turbulent waters that prompted the Viking invaders to name it the ‘Strang Fjiord’. The Lough is a site of Special Scientific Interest and of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On the other side lies the Lecale area and views from the site stretch to the Mourne Mountains.
The Barn has a four star rating, and is a two storey three bedroom barn with an internal balcony overlooking the lounge area. it can sleep six or seven people. There are facilities for the disabled and wheelchair access including a downstairs bedroom with two single beds and adjacent shower room. The ground floor is tiled throughout for easy movement. Upstairs are two further bedrooms– one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. There is a bed settee on the open balcony area if additional sleeping accommodation is needed. There is a bathroom upstairs. Many of the original beams and stonework have been preserved in the renovation. The overall layout is open plan to allow the whole family to enjoy all aspects of holiday life.
