Fanad Lighthouse

Visit the incredible Fanad Lighthouse, watching over the mouth of Lough Swilly since 1817. In 1811, the HMS Saldanha sank and 254 people died, the only survivor was the captain's parrot. After this tragedy, a lighthouse was built at Fannet Point as it was then known, and on St. Patrick’s Day 1817, the light was lit for the first time. During a guided tour, meet some of the lightkeepers who have lived at Fanad and hear of their challenges, learn about the history of this Gaeltacht area, and discover the new technology that watches the coastline today. Climb 76 steep granite steps to the top of the lighthouse and marvel at the incredible views. Drop by the exhibition of Fanad Head treasures at the visitor centre and later you can walk along the headland and watch the roaring waves. Don't forget to bring your camera.
