Coleman Irish Music Centre - Ceoláras Coleman

At Coleman Irish Music Centre, Gurteen, County Sligo visitors can view an audio-visual presentation on the history of Irish traditional music. An exhibition area has interactive multimedia terminals of various musicians, their music, and styles, from the beginning of the last century to modern times. The centre welcomes individuals and groups as well as coach tours. The music shop stocks a good selection of traditional music CD's, including many of an archival type, DVDs, music books, musical instruments, accessories, gift ideas and lots more. Throughout July and August nightly summer sessions of Irish music, song and dance features a resident group showcasing traditional music at its best. This is one of the longest running shows of its kind. Visitors are encouraged to participate, if they so wish, and learn a step or two of a dance such as The Stack of Barley or Shoe the Donkey. The Coleman Farmhouse Cottage is located at Mount Irwin, 5km from Gurteen. It is a replica of the original Coleman home and gives visitors a unique insight into how people lived in the early 20th century in Ireland. The cottage has three rooms and is constructed of red sandstone and roofed in traditional thatch. Everyday cooking utensils, furniture, crockery and other artefacts, which date back to the 1920's are on display. These give the visitor a living representation of life during that time.
