The Market House is a refurbished stone building situated in the centre of Monaghan Town, which is now a gallery and art venue. The gallery aims to enhance the quality of people’s experience of the arts, to advocate the unique value of the arts in society and to recognise both promise and achievement in the creation of art.
The Market House, Monaghan, was built in 1792 to the designs of a talented amateur architect of the time called Samuel Hayes. It is built of local grey limestone. The carving and stonework are noted for their uncommon delicacy and clarity. It is considered one of the most delicate and elegant 18th Century buildings in the north.
It is an exceptional exhibition space with both an upstairs and downstairs gallery. Downstairs has a wonderful natural light and is a great setting for three dimensional artwork. Upstairs is a larger space and usually hosts two dimensional artwork and is also used as a music venue from September through to May. Both spaces have state of the art lighting and hanging systems. There is also a fully equipped sound room, 42 inch plasma TV, DVD, video, projector and camcorder available. The building is also equipped with a lift.
Exhibitions are usually booked one year in advance. There is an excellent exhibition space and music venue providing a wonderful environment to promote the arts. Every support is given to each individual exhibition to facilitate its success.
