Wild Ireland West Walks is a specialist tour company based in Dooagh, County Mayo. The staff is made up of experienced hikers and archaeologists from the Achill Archaeological Field School.
Wild Ireland West Walks offer guided hikes to some of Achill’s hidden gems, including Annagh, the Minaun Cliffs, Achillbeg Island and around the Keem Bay, where they’ve been conducting archaeological excavations since 2009. Immerse yourself in the landscape, and learn about the history of the island, from the ancient megalithic tombs to poignant Famine-era cottages. Choose the level that’s right for you with the graded easy, medium and hard walks.
For those who really want to immerse themselves in the historic landscape, they offer a number of guided archaeological tours. See 6,000 years of Achill’s history in a single day, with a one day bus tour of the island. This tour will take you to sites like the deserted village of Slievemore, and Kildavnet Castle, once home to notorious pirate queen Grace O’Malley.
Further afield from Achill, they offer tours of archaeological sites in North Mayo, Sligo, Clew Bay, Galway City and the Irish Midlands.
Each tour is led by a qualified archaeologist, with a selection of handpicked sites including the Céide Fields, Clonmacnoise, Carrowmore, and Rockfleet Castle.
